Imported contacts have wrong or jumbled names? Here's the fix

Jumbled names almost always come from column mapping: a full name imported into the first-name field, or columns read in the wrong order. Re-convert with correct mapping and the split-names option, and delete the bad batch first.

Why names get jumbled

Three causes cover almost every case: a single "Name" column was imported without splitting into first and last names; the CSV columns were read in the wrong order (name in the phone column and vice versa); or a surname-first list ("Sharma, Priya") was treated as first-name-first.

Remove the bad batch first

On iPhone: if you added a suffix or prefix tag when importing, search for it in Contacts, select all matches and delete. Otherwise, iCloud.com → Contacts lets you multi-select with the Ctrl/Cmd key and delete in one go.

On Android / Google: contacts imported through contacts.google.com sit under an import label — open that label, select all, delete.

Re-convert with the right mapping

  1. Drop your original file into the converter and open the mapping step.
  2. If your file has one name column, map it to Full name and turn on Split full names.
  3. If names are "Last, First", map the column to Full name, import once, then use each card's edit screen — or split the column in your spreadsheet first with Text to Columns.
  4. Check the live preview on a few rows before downloading.

Preventing it next time

Always glance at the contact-card preview before downloading — it shows exactly which field each value will land in on the phone. Ten seconds of preview saves an evening of cleanup.

Frequently asked questions

Names imported as phone numbers — what happened?

The columns were misaligned, usually because the CSV uses semicolons instead of commas or has a header row read as data. The converter auto-detects delimiters and headers; re-run it and check the mapping.

First and last names are swapped. Do I have to redo everything?

Redo the import with correct mapping — it's faster than editing each contact. Delete the swapped batch first so you don't get duplicates.

Can I fix just a few contacts?

Yes. In the converter's review list, tap any contact to edit its card — fix the fields, then download only the contacts you corrected using the checkboxes.
